Six tapes, in order: from a young singer in Mumbai to the voice people wait all year to dance to.
Falguni Pathak was born in Mumbai on 12 March 1969, into a Gujarati family. She was singing on a stage by the age of nine.
It was not a welcome hobby at first: her father did not want her performing in public. She kept singing anyway.
In 1987, at eighteen, she chose music as her full-time work. Her schooling in it was the live circuit: Gujarati folk, garba and dandiya, sung for people who came to dance, not to sit and listen.
That is still the job. The crowd moves in circles; the band keeps it moving.
In 1994 she formed her own band, Ta Thaiya (also written Tha Thaiyaa). It is still the group behind her on Navratri stages.
Universal Music India released her first album, Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi, in August 1998. It carried Chudi, Aayee Pardes Se and the garba Indhana Winva, and it made her a household name.
Every year brought another tape: Maine Payal Hai Chhankai (1999), Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaye (2000), whose video starred Ayesha Takia and Trisha Krishnan early in their careers, O Piya (2001) with Saawan Mein, and Yeh Kisne Jadoo Kiya (2002). Bollywood borrowed her too. Yaad Piya Ki was used in Pyaar Koi Khel Nahin (1999).
The title comes from Navratri. Her nine-night Mumbai shows have become a fixture. In 2025 and again in 2026 they are at Jio World Convention Centre in BKC. She also takes the garba abroad: Dubai's Zabeel Amphitheatre in 2022, and North American Dandiya Dhoom tours in 2025 and 2026.
Television came calling too, with appearances on Comedy Nights with Kapil and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
Jode Rejo Raaj (August 2017) brought her back to music videos. Vasaladi, a Krishna-themed garba composed by Shail Hada, arrived just before Navratri 2022. London Ke Limbdi followed for the Gujarati film Umbarro, and the 90s catalogue keeps coming back in new mixes and reissues.
